A mind awakens in an unfamiliar environment, with no memory and searching for something unknown. Despite enduring pain in an effort to recover its identity, it repeatedly fails. A chance discovery of an old trace brings fragments of a forgotten past to light. However, as the memories become clearer, confusion deepens, and doubts about oneself, along with feelings of self-loathing, intensify. This overwhelming self-hatred ultimately renders any resolve to change meaningless, trapping the protagonist in a cycle of despair.

PROCESS
MOEBIUS began as an attempt to give visual form to self-loathing: the recurring conflict between a person’s unguarded self and the identity they construct to satisfy others. My interpretation of Lacan’s Real and Symbolic informed this tension, particularly how external expectations can shape the way we reject parts of ourselves. The production began with a script and dialogue written by Soyeong Choi. Actor Haeyun Shin performed every role on camera—a decision that also supported the film’s premise that its characters are different aspects of one person. I used Runway’s Act-One to transfer these recorded facial performances onto characters whose appearances were created in Midjourney. This made one actor’s interpretation the performance foundation for the film’s multiple identities. All images were generated in Midjourney, with video generation handled through Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha. Maintaining consistent faces proved relatively straightforward. The more demanding work involved interactions between the characters and their surroundings, particularly liquids and collapsing fragments. These interactions required repeated iteration to convey the intended action and visual context clearly. I generated approximately 550 video clips in total, selecting takes according to how convincingly the figure and surrounding elements worked together within each shot. Sound effects were created with ElevenLabs and music with Suno. I brought the performances, generated footage, music, and sound together in Adobe Premiere Pro.
