Altered State is 21 minutes, 18 scenes, built by two people on two continents — and written over a full year before a single frame was generated. Story, project bible, character canon, and per-scene prompt blocks were all locked on paper first; generation was the last step, not the first. The first things boarded were the film's two load-bearing scenes — the greeting in Obernia and the infusion-room turn — because if those didn't hold, nothing else mattered. The entire film lived on a single CapCut Video Studio canvas: some 80 frame boards, each carrying its prompt block, reference bindings, and generated takes. Every shot was generated against locked multi-view character sheets and a strict palette bible — arterial red/magenta for the City, cobalt/pink/gold for Obernia, seamless white for the Institute; three worlds, never mixed. Scenes that resisted got variant boards, and nothing reached the edit without surviving the board first. Grading reference was 1980s practical-effects cinema: 35mm grain, anamorphic falloff, frame skipping, Henson-weight puppet texture. Any frame that looked "AI-clean" was regraded or rejected. What got thrown away: anything with drifting character identity, any Obernia shot that lost its handmade miniature quality, and a post-credits plant we cut for discipline. A year of writing taught us the hardest skill in AI filmmaking isn't generating — it's refusing. Altered State is also a beginning: the first film of the Hypnia-verse, the anthology universe we're building — and the first meeting with Tellington, the storyteller who will narrate what comes next. Pipeline: written by hand; generated in CapCut Video Studio (Seedance), with Banana Pro + Krea 2 for characters and worlds, ElevenLabs for voice, Suno for score.
