ABOUT

Deep inside a Norwegian mountain, a national vault preserves endangered forms of human creativity. A child’s drawing, handmade birdhouses, a living room with its own taste and a coffee stain turned into an animal are catalogued with the care normally reserved for rare species. Nasjonalt hvelv for kreativt artsmangfold is a fictional institution built around a serious question: what happens to creative variety when we increasingly outsource the act of imagining? The film uses monumental architecture, meticulous archive labels and ordinary handmade objects to make that question tangible. Concept, visual world and final film by John-Ivar Eidsmo.

PROCESS

I built the vault as a believable institution before treating it as a film: the mountain entrance, archive architecture, uniforms, signage and specimen labels all belong to the same visual world. The objects are deliberately small and familiar. Their significance comes from what they reveal about imagination, personal taste and the possibility of different answers. Generated stills and moving shots were developed around those specimens, then assembled in VEGAS Pro. The edit moves from the scale of the building to the intimacy of the objects and back again. The institution stays completely serious about its work; the humour comes from recognising what it has decided is worth saving.
