ABOUT
A wooden marionette tears through its red strings and flees the puppet theater, longing to be free. But the city outside is overgrown with chrysanthemums, and every masked figure is bound by strings that descend from the sky. When it knocks away an offered bouquet, a stranger's string snaps for an instant, only to grow back as the whole city begins to dance. The moment the marionette accepts a flower, it is captured again and forced to raise the chrysanthemums toward the heavens in prayer. When it finally severs its strings for good, the theater vanishes like an illusion, leaving it alone in a dark field of flowers. Freedom meant no one could control it. It also meant no one was there. Born from a single painting and the song it inspired, this film does not simply animate the image. It escapes the painting's pose, is dragged back into it, and ends in a field without strings. Even the prayer, even the dream, may have been given to us.

PROCESS
Everything began with one painting and the song written from it. The painting shows a masked figure kneeling, chrysanthemums growing from its body and red strings rising to the sky. I worked out the story from the lyrics first, then mapped every scene to the song's sections before generating a single frame. Boarded first. I locked the look before any motion. Characters, the bouquet and the backgrounds were generated as stills. I rejected whole sets along the way: the first protagonist, the first wooden marionette and all eight first-pass backgrounds were thrown out. Only 16 reference images survived into a "master reference" folder, and every later shot had to match them. I then generated 18 clips at 480p in OiiOii and laid them against the song in Canva as a moving storyboard to find the gaps. Filled and fixed, not regenerated. The gaps were filled with short Seedance and Topview clips. When a shot was almost right, I patched it instead of starting over. Runway Aleph put bouquets in every dancer's hands and removed a background extra whose mask had slipped off. A costume error was fixed on a single still first, and that still was then animated. 23 clips were upscaled from 480p to 1080p with SeedVR2. Graded against the original painting and the locked references, never against "looks good". A beautiful shot that drifted from the masks, the red strings or the cream-colored chrysanthemums was cut. The remake. Over seven rounds of feedback, I generated 5 new clips in AZ8 (Wan 3.0) and kept 1: the wooden hand touching a flower under the moon, upscaled with Topaz. I made 3 Runway Aleph edits and kept 1. Most fixes ended up as editing rather than generation: slow motion, a dissolve instead of a blackout, and a wire removed frame by frame. The film was rebuilt in DaVinci Resolve as v18.
