PROCESS
The character in the film was developed from just two photographs of myself taken around fifteen years ago. These became the starting point for building a consistent fictional performer. I then built a larger visual reference library for the film: warehouse environments, autonomous robots, vehicles, machinery and other props. The film itself was built shot by shot rather than generated as one continuous sequence. There was no fully written script or fixed storyboard. Instead, the project developed through a broad process of experimentation. Different methods of control were tested throughout production: background references, character and prop references, movement references, 3D previs for camera movement, and audio references for lip sync and timing. Some of these methods worked well for particular shots and less well for others. At times, deliberately removing references or loosening the prompt produced better results. Too much control could push a shot into a corner, while unexpected generations could suggest solutions I would not have planned myself. The process became a constant balance between directing the model and allowing accidents to happen. Most generations were discarded. Shots were selected not only for performance and composition, but for how well they worked together in the edit. Color and lighting varied considerably between generations, so extensive color grading was necessary to make individual shots feel like they belonged to the same film. The final film is therefore less a single AI generation than a constructed performance made from many iterations, selections and rejected attempts. The music itself is entirely human-made; AI was used for the visual production.
